A Healthy Response to Climate Change
Saturday November 2, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
The ecological crisis is threatening health and the social, structural, and planetary foundations we depend upon to run health systems. The alarming nature of the news combined with a lack of coverage in medical curricula and patchy instruction in advocacy skills means that most physicians don’t know what they don’t know about how to contribute to the management of the climate emergency. And yet, globally, physicians are leading the way. The same skills that make us good at managing clinical emergencies–excellent team leadership, effective communication skills, the ability to lead through uncertainty, and a bias for action, make us world-class advocates for a healthy response to climate change. By shifting practice, money, and power physicians can lead a push for the healthy future needed to protect health and health systems.

Learning Objectives
1. Describe the planetary health frame and how it relates to health and health systems.(scholar, professional)
2. Anticipate and manage the major threats posed by climate change to health and health systems. (leader, professional)
3. Describe priority action items to protect planetary health now and into the future. (leader, scholar, advocate, professional, communicator)
